No talent points yet? Start Elwynn with Consecration and earn class talent experience first. The numbered sheet is your progression target.
Three nodes worth understanding.
These are points invested in the Protection tree, not the price of a single node.
Show the three milestone tooltips
Hallowed Ground
10 points in Protection
- Trigger
- Hammer of Justice lands
- Effect
- Free Consecration
- Limit
- Once every 4 seconds
Your hammer now creates ground damage. This only works when Hammer of Justice lands; unlocking the node alone does not give a fresh character the hammer.
Ardent Defender
20 Protection points + Hallowed Ground rank 1
- Run starts with
- Hammer of Justice
- Shield per Consecration
- 8% of maximum health
- Shield cap
- 30% · 39% with Blessed Life
- While a shield holds
- +20% damage
This is where the loop comes together: start with the hammer, create Consecration, then build a shield. Keeping that shield up also keeps the damage bonus.
Hammer of the Righteous
30 Protection points + Ardent Defender rank 1
- Maximum health
- +15%
- Extra damage per spell
- 1% of your maximum health
- Hammer bonus
- 1.5% of the target’s maximum health
- Broken shield
- Burst within 10 yards
Health now helps your damage as well as your survival. Shield-break damage is half what the shield absorbed, capped at half its capacity. It is a bonus, not a reason to stand in every hit.
The sheet spends 31 of the available 51 points. Resets are free. The remaining 20 are not prescribed as a tested maximum-level build. View the original tree capture ↗
Put numbers on the interaction.
Set your maximum health after bonuses. The figures below follow the checked tooltip formulas.
Open the health-to-shield calculator
At 1,000 health, four full 8% applications reach the 300 cap if no damage is taken. In combat, damage consumes the shield as you build it.
Three holy-looking spells. Different jobs.
The name and rarity won’t tell you whether a card fixes your problem.

Divine Shield
Temporary immunity. The photographed card auto-casts below 35% health.
A safety net, not permanent protection.

Redemption
Kills can trigger a nearby holy explosion, which can set off another burst.
It does not heal you. “Epic” does not make it the defensive pick.

Holy Shield
During its active window, enemies that hit you in melee take damage.
The card has a duration and cooldown. Taking extra hits can still kill you.
Our October 19 card capture. These are three offered choices, not a guaranteed roll or a required three-spell loadout. Check today’s card for current numbers.
Fill the gap in your build.
Compare gear effects and Human racial bonuses
Dying in a burst?
Compare health and damage reduction first.
Surviving, but staying low?
Look for healing with a trigger you can reliably activate.
Healthy, but killing slowly?
Add damage without removing the recovery that got you here.
More XP and gold, plus timed damage.

These effects do not establish a best race; no Human-versus-Dwarf comparison was run. The recovery-focused equipment approach also appears in Whiter’s older Paladin example ↗.
Check the broken link.
I unlocked Hallowed Ground. Where is my hammer?
Hallowed Ground changes what happens when Hammer of Justice lands. Ardent Defender, at 20 Protection points, supplies the hammer at the start of a run. Before that, the interaction still needs access to that spell.
My shield disappears immediately.
Check Consecration first: each application adds only 8% of maximum health, not the full shield cap. If incoming damage consumes that amount immediately, more damage alone won’t keep the +20% shield bonus active. Compare a defensive effect or safer positioning.
Should I deliberately break the shield for damage?
The burst is capped at half the shield’s capacity. Losing the shield also loses Ardent Defender’s +20% damage while unshielded. Treat the burst as compensation when a shield breaks, not a command to take hits.
A historical Holy Shield example.
Whiter explains retaliation, mitigation and healing from 6:59. This is a separate player setup, not a recording of the 31-point route above.
Whiter · · starts at 6:59
The cited explanation does not establish its client version or a complete point allocation. The reported Elwynn clear belongs to the player’s recording.
